In a significant shift, President Felix Tshisekedi’s office indicated that Kinshasa would also participate in the dialogue, contrary to its previous commitment to avoid negotiations with the rebel group. Angola is actively facilitating the discussions, aiming to establish a sustainable ceasefire and alleviate tensions between Congo and Rwanda.
The conflict in eastern Congo, deeply rooted in historical issues related to Rwanda’s 1994 genocide and competition for mineral resources, has intensified. Since January, the fighting has claimed approximately 7,000 lives, with over 600,000 individuals displaced since November, according to recent United Nations reports.
