The local clothing and footwear market is currently struggling with low demand, despite stable prices. Traders expect sales to improve ahead of Eid Al Fitr, particularly after salary disbursements. Challenges include seasonal overlaps and weak purchasing power; however, preparations for the holiday are underway with goods displayed at competitive prices.
Currently, the local clothing and footwear market in Amman is experiencing a decline in purchasing power, despite steady prices. Traders and stakeholders anticipate an uptick in sales as Eid Al Fitr approaches, particularly when salaries are disbursed, which typically leads to an influx of shoppers two weeks before the holidays.
Asaad Qawasmeh, an importer and board member of the Amman Chamber of Commerce, has noted that the demand remains below average, primarily due to public purchasing power issues. He expects an increase in demand during Ramadan’s final week but highlights the challenges merchants face, such as the need to discount winter clothing while summer items are introduced simultaneously.
Moreover, Qawasmeh disclosed that Jordan’s imports of ready-made clothing amounted to JD45 million and JD14 million for footwear during the first two months of the year, sourced from countries including China, Egypt, Turkey, Europe, the United States, and other West Asian regions.
According to Munir Dayeh, another importer and wholesaler, commercial activity in the clothing and footwear sectors is considerably lower than in previous holiday seasons. He noted that preparations for the upcoming holidays are underway, with goods already displayed at competitive prices in stores.
Ihab Qadri, a representative of the leather and garment industries at the Jordan Chamber of Industry, stated that current market activity is at standard levels in comparison to previous seasons, indicating that industry facilities are equipped to meet forthcoming demand.
In summary, while the local clothing and footwear market faces challenges leading up to Eid Al Fitr, including low purchasing power and seasonal overlaps, stakeholders forecast a potential improvement in sales driven by salary disbursements. Preparations are in place, with products available at competitive prices, suggesting a readiness to meet consumer demand as the holiday approaches.
