Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar recently engaged in high-level discussions in Iraq regarding collaboration in the oil, electricity, and gas sectors along with bilateral trade. His meeting with Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein on March 16 focused on enhancing existing partnerships and addressing key energy issues, as reported by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry.
During the talks, Bayraktar and Hussein reached an agreement to double the electricity supply from Türkiye to Iraq. Additionally, they explored the potential for Iraq to import gas from Türkiye to satisfy the demands of its power plants, aiming to bolster cooperation in this sector.
The discussions also encouraged Turkish investment in Iraq’s oil and gas industries, with both nations striving to facilitate opportunities for Turkish companies. Bayraktar’s visit follows the U.S. decision to revoke a sanctions waiver that permitted Iraq to procure electricity from Iran.
In Baghdad, Bayraktar further met with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, where they evaluated strategies to enhance their energy collaboration and support regional energy security. He communicated on X that they agreed to strengthen the strategic partnership between Türkiye and Iraq.
Subsequently, Bayraktar conferred with Deputy Prime Minister and Oil Minister Hayyan Abdulgani, and Electricity Minister Ziyad Ali Fadhil. His trip also included a visit to Erbil to meet with Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, where they outlined steps for advancing oil and electricity trade and cooperation between public and private enterprises in the hydrocarbon sectors.
