Congo to Participate in Peace Talks with Rwandan-Backed Rebels in Angola

The Democratic Republic of Congo will attend peace talks in Angola to address conflict with Rwandan-backed rebels. President Tshisekedi is reconsidering his position on M23 following military defeats. The composition of the delegation is yet to be determined, while M23 has outlined their demands before negotiations.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has announced its intention to participate in peace talks in Angola on Tuesday, aiming to address escalating tensions caused by Rwandan-backed rebels in the eastern regions. Angola previously conveyed that these direct negotiations with the M23 rebels would commence in Luanda on March 18.

President Felix Tshisekedi, who has historically dismissed the idea of engaging with the M23 group, is reconsidering his stance following a series of military setbacks and diminishing regional support for the DRC.

Tina Salama, spokesperson for the presidency, indicated that the composition of the delegation has not yet been finalized. In response to the invitation from Angola, M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka confirmed the group’s awareness of the talks and outlined their demands, which include a public reaffirmation from President Tshisekedi expressing his willingness to negotiate directly.

In summary, the Democratic Republic of Congo is set to engage in peace negotiations with Rwandan-backed rebels, a shift prompted by recent military challenges. The dialogue will take place in Angola, where the DRC aims to seek resolutions over escalating conflict. Critical demands have been made by the M23, showcasing the complexities of the dialogue moving forward.
