Amnesty International Kenya has urged the Kenyan government to prioritize human rights discussions within the diplomatic framework of its relations with the Netherlands. This call comes in light of the upcoming state visit by His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima, scheduled from March 18 to 20, 2025, aimed at enhancing bilateral relations.
Irungu Houghton, the Section Director for Amnesty International, emphasized the importance of addressing human rights violations during this visit. He stated, “As Dutch authorities prepare for the official state visit to Kenya this week to intensify bilateral Dutch-Kenya relations, Amnesty International calls on both authorities to place human rights at the heart of the visit, address human rights violations and commit to accountability for all victims following the recent brutal crackdown on human rights.”
Houghton highlighted that this visit comes after significant unrest, noting that over the past nine months, police brutality has led to the deaths of over 60 protesters, alongside the abduction of more than 80 activists. He insisted on the necessity for the visiting Dutch ministers and the Royal Couple to place human rights as a priority in their discussions.
Furthermore, Amnesty International called for a public declaration from both Kenyan and Dutch ministers outlining measures to improve human rights conditions in Kenya. Houghton cautioned that economic and military interests should not overshadow the critical matter of human rights.
The Royal Couple’s visit has been formally invited by President William Ruto, marking their first state visit to Kenya. This visit symbolizes the strong relationship and enduring cooperation between the two nations. The Netherlands aims to establish new partnerships while enhancing existing ties, recognizing Kenya’s growing influence on a global scale.
