Wärtsilä will supply replacement engines for two pusher tugs in Paraguay, owned by ADM Naviera Chaco S.R.L. Each tug will be fitted with three Wärtsilä 20 engines, enhancing efficiency and sustainability. This initiative aligns with ADM’s goal to decrease emissions by 25% by 2035 and illustrates a shift towards greater environmental responsibility in the marine sector.
Wärtsilä has been chosen to supply replacement engines for two pusher tugs operating on the rivers of Paraguay, owned by ADM Naviera Chaco S.R.L., a subsidiary of agribusiness giant ADM. The modifications and installations will be executed in Asuncion, Paraguay.
The vessels involved in this initiative are the Decatur Lady and the Tendota. Each tug will undergo refitting to include three Wärtsilä 20 engines, which were delivered to the shipyard earlier this year. The Wärtsilä 20 is recognized for its compact and lightweight design, providing flexibility in fuel choices and dependable performance in both genset and main engine roles.
The new engines are projected to enhance efficiency while reducing the environmental impact of the pusher tugs. ADM aims to achieve a 25% reduction in emissions by 2035, positioning the advanced Wärtsilä engine technology as a crucial element in their sustainability efforts in South America.
Raul Valdez, the logistics director at ADM Naviera Chaco S.R.L., remarked, “The Wärtsilä engines selected for this project have the fuel flexibility that we seek, especially as we look to the potential of alternative future fuels. At the same time, the project will help us to improve operational reliability and lower our maintenance costs.”
Hanno Schoonman, director of sales for the AMER region at Wärtsilä Marine, expressed satisfaction regarding the project: “We are delighted that Wärtsilä engines have been selected for this important project, which highlights the marine industry’s shift to greater sustainability and increased efficiency. ADM’s vision to be the provider of choice to meet the demand for low-carbon intensity feedstocks is very much in line with Wärtsilä’s own commitment to supporting the industry’s decarbonization efforts.”
Wärtsilä’s selection to provide engines for Paraguayan pusher tugs underscores a significant commitment to enhancing marine efficiency and sustainability. The refitting of the Decatur Lady and Tendota with Wärtsilä 20 engines is anticipated to reduce emissions and operational costs, aligning with ADM’s ambitious environmental goals. This project reflects a broader trend within the marine industry toward embracing advanced technologies for sustainable practices.
