Tropical Cyclone Jude has led to nine deaths, injuring many and displacing thousands in Mozambique and Malawi, where heavy flooding has caused extensive damage. Relief efforts are currently impeded by the destruction of roads and bridges.
Tropical Cyclone Jude has resulted in the loss of at least nine lives, according to official reports. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Mozambique has confirmed that six individuals lost their lives while 20 were injured, with 9,525 people displaced in Nampula and Niasa provinces as well as Zambezia in central Mozambique. In neighboring Malawi, three fatalities have been recorded, and approximately 20,000 people are now homeless due to extensive flooding in the southern area caused by the cyclone.
Chiphiliro Khamula, a spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Malawi, stated that those who have been displaced are currently being housed in evacuation centers. The cyclone made landfall in northern Mozambique early on a Sunday and subsequently moved southward into Malawi, resulting in significant flooding from Monday through Wednesday.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that relief efforts are facing challenges due to impassable roads and bridges that have been swept away by the cyclone. This disaster follows a similar event in December of the previous year, when Cyclone Chido affected both countries, leading to the deaths of 73 people in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi.
