Tropical Cyclone Jude has claimed nine lives in Mozambique and Malawi, with six fatalities in Mozambique and three in Malawi. Over 29,500 people have been affected, with thousands displaced and significant flooding reported. Relief operations are severely disrupted due to damaged infrastructure.
Tropical Cyclone Jude has tragically resulted in the loss of at least nine lives across Mozambique and Malawi. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction in Mozambique reported that six individuals died, 20 sustained injuries, and approximately 9,525 people were displaced in the northern provinces of Nampula and Niasa, as well as in the central province of Zambezia.
In Malawi, the storm has claimed three lives, with estimates indicating that 20,000 individuals have been rendered homeless in the southern region, where extensive flooding has occurred. Chiphiliro Khamula, a spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs in Malawi, stated that the displaced individuals are currently being accommodated in evacuation centers.
Tropical Cyclone Jude made landfall in northern Mozambique early on Sunday and subsequently affected southern Malawi, resulting in severe flooding between Monday and Wednesday. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has indicated that relief efforts are facing significant challenges due to washed-away roads and bridges, impeding access to affected areas.
This incident follows the devastation caused by Cyclone Chido in December of the previous year, which resulted in the deaths of 73 individuals in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi.
The devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Jude highlights the continuing challenges faced by Mozambique and Malawi due to extreme weather events. With nine confirmed fatalities and thousands displaced, relief efforts are hindered by infrastructure damage. These challenges serve as a reminder of the persistent impact of cyclones in the region, following the struggles faced during Cyclone Chido last December.
