The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) is set to distribute 2,800 emergency kits to individuals affected by Cyclone Jude in Mozambique’s Zambézia and Nampula provinces. This initiative was announced by the United Nations agency, emphasizing its commitment to assess needs and provide essential assistance amidst significant challenges.
Cyclone Jude struck Mozambique early on Monday, causing at least 14 fatalities and injuring 60 individuals. Furthermore, approximately 100,410 people have been affected across Tete, Manica, Zambézia, Nampula, Niassa, and Cabo Delgado provinces. The IOM’s emergency kits include critical supplies such as mats, mosquito nets, blankets, and tarpaulins.
The need for urgent support in impacted areas was highlighted by IOM representatives. Government figures presented by spokesperson Inocêncio Impissa reveal that the cyclone has resulted in the destruction of 30 health centers. Additionally, 19,961 families have been impacted, alongside 20,244 homes either partially or entirely destroyed, affecting 59 schools, 182 classrooms, over 17,000 pupils, 264 teachers, and 1,262 agricultural areas.
Mozambique experiences cyclones primarily during its rainy season from October to April, which has already seen the impacts of Cyclones Chido and Dikeledi. These past cyclones, occurring between December and January, significantly affected Cabo Delgado and Nampula, impacting around 736,000 individuals.
From 2019 to 2023, extreme weather events, including cyclones and storms, have resulted in over 1,016 deaths and affected approximately 4.9 million people, as reported by the National Statistics Institute (INE). Mozambique is recognized as one of the nations most vulnerable to climate change, frequently facing both intense flooding and prolonged droughts during its rainy season.
The IOM’s emergency response underlines the urgent need for humanitarian assistance following Cyclone Jude’s devastating impact in Mozambique. The ongoing rainy season exacerbates the vulnerability of the nation, already suffering the consequences of climate change.
