The AU reaffirms its support for this agreement and its readiness to facilitate dialogue among parties for a peaceful resolution.
On 12 March 2025, the African Union (AU) issued a press statement reflecting its deep concern regarding the ongoing situation involving the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in Ethiopia. The AU emphasized the critical need for stability and peace in the region, urging all involved parties to exercise restraint and engage in constructive dialogue to resolve the issues at hand.
In response to recent developments, the AU strongly encourages adherence to the obligations outlined in the Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (COHA), which was established between the TPLF and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in November 2022 in Pretoria. The AU highlighted that compliance with this agreement is vital for maintaining peace and fostering an environment conducive to sustainable development and reconciliation.
The AU reaffirmed its unwavering support for the implementation of the COHA and pledged to accompany the parties throughout this process. Additionally, the AU, through its High-Level Panel, expressed its readiness to facilitate ongoing dialogue and cooperation between the involved parties, striving for a peaceful resolution.
The African Union Commission envisions a continent that is politically united, guided by the principles of Pan-Africanism, and recognizes the significance of addressing broader issues such as violent extremism and migration. Agenda 2063 serves as Africa’s comprehensive development framework for realizing inclusive and sustainable socio-economic progress over the next 50 years.
The African Union remains committed to promoting stability in the Tigray region and believes that dialogue and adherence to the existing agreements are essential for peace. The AU’s support for the COHA and its facilitation of cooperation among stakeholders highlight its ongoing efforts to address the challenges facing Ethiopia. Moving forward, collaboration and adherence to commitments are crucial for achieving lasting peace and development in the area.
