US Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot, confirmed the US government’s support for Guyana amid Venezuelan aggression. Following a naval incursion, Theriot emphasized standing “shoulder to shoulder” with Guyana. The situation escalated with Venezuela’s plans for elections in the contested Essequibo region, prompting Guyana to seek support from the ICJ.
On Thursday, US Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot, reaffirmed robust US support for Guyana amid escalating tensions with Venezuela regarding the Essequibo region. Theriot remarked, “We support Guyana 100 percent against this aggression; it is unacceptable, and we won’t allow Venezuela to threaten Guyana’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.” She emphasized the commitment of the United States to stand with Guyana alongside other international partners.
The recent Venezuelan naval incursion on March 1, 2025, has incited broad condemnation from Guyana’s regional and international allies. In light of the heightened tensions, Guyana has pursued provisional measures from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), especially following Venezuela’s decision to hold elections on May 25, coinciding with Guyana’s 59th Independence celebrations. This electoral process, which aims to fill positions in the Essequibo region, is perceived by many as a direct challenge to Guyana’s territorial claims.
Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn revealed on Wednesday that the authorities are monitoring “sleepers” or secret agents from Venezuela believed to be active within Guyana. He cautioned that individuals who support Venezuela’s election of regional officials could face treason charges, underscoring Guyana’s serious stance on preserving its territorial integrity.
The United States has unequivocally reaffirmed its support for Guyana in the face of Venezuelan territorial provocations. Ambassador Nicole Theriot’s statements signal not only diplomatic solidarity but also a warning against external threats to Guyana’s sovereignty. The ongoing tensions with Venezuela necessitate vigilance, as reflected in Guyana’s legal actions and domestic security measures to counter foreign encroachment.
