UNITEL and Ericsson Collaborate to Modernize Angola’s Telecommunications Network

UNITEL and Ericsson have launched a significant network modernization initiative to enhance connectivity in Angola through advanced technology, including 5G. This partnership promises improvements in mobile broadband services crucial for economic growth while enabling various modern communications solutions. The endeavor aims to maximize automated benefits and provide high-quality communication services, highlighting a transformative phase in Angola’s telecommunications sector.

UNITEL has partnered with Ericsson to initiate a comprehensive network modernization initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity in Angola. This upgrade is set to significantly improve Enhanced Mobile Broadband and Fixed Wireless Access services, which are essential for fostering economic growth and facilitating high-speed, low-latency applications.

Ericsson has effectively transformed UNITEL S.A.’s core network utilizing its dual-mode 5G Core, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), and Cloud Native Infrastructure solutions. This innovative architecture integrates both 4G and 5G technologies on a unified platform, enabling UNITEL to deliver customized services through network slicing, exposure, and edge capabilities, as well as upgraded voice and data services on a 5G standalone (5G SA) network.

The dual-mode 5G Core technology, which combines Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and 5G Core, is based on cloud-native, microservice technology. This integration simplifies the transition of legacy 2G and 3G voice services to 4G and 5G networks. Moreover, Ericsson’s IMS allows UNITEL to offer real-time communication services to both businesses and consumers across various access networks.

Both companies have successfully conducted a trial data call on a live 5G Standalone network, demonstrating the full capabilities of 5G technology. This milestone represents a significant advancement in UNITEL’s efforts to deliver next-generation 5G services, including innovative network slicing technology.

Júlio Gonçalves, Director of Core and Services at UNITEL, remarked, “Our partnership with Ericsson marks a transformative moment for Angola’s telecommunications sector. It enables us to provide our customers with a world-class network that will drive socio-economic growth and advancement across the country. With Ericsson’s cutting-edge solutions, we are confident in delivering an exceptional customer experience.”

The modernization of UNITEL’s network will support a variety of services, including Voice over LTE (VoLTE), Wi-Fi Calling, 5G Voice, Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), and other high-speed, low-latency applications. This technological progress is expected to greatly enhance connectivity and stimulate economic development in Angola.

Majda Lahlou Kassi, Vice President and Head of Ericsson West & Southern Africa, stated, “We are dedicated to enabling a fully connected Angola through 5G technology, driving innovation, and accelerating the digital economy. Our advanced solutions will help UNITEL meet the growing demand for smart devices and data usage, bringing innovative technologies that open up new opportunities for businesses and individuals alike.”

Over the past two decades, UNITEL and Ericsson have collaborated on Core Network, Radio Access Network, and Billing solutions. This latest modernization initiative seeks to optimize the advantages of automation while improving the overall 5G customer experience, delivering reliable, secure, and high-quality communication solutions.

The collaboration between UNITEL and Ericsson marks a pivotal advancement in Angola’s telecommunications infrastructure. Through advanced network modernization, including 5G technology integration, the initiatives are geared towards enhancing connectivity, boosting economic growth, and providing exceptional customer experiences. As both companies work together to leverage technological advancements, Angola stands to gain significant benefits in terms of socio-economic development.
