Vice Admiral Edward Ahlgren, the UK Defence Senior Advisor to the Middle East and North Africa, has concluded a productive two-day visit to Lebanon, where he interacted with senior Lebanese and UN officials. He congratulated President Aoun on his election and the subsequent formation of a new government, indicating a hopeful future for the nation’s security and stability. Vice Admiral Ahlgren emphasized the United Kingdom’s commitment to supporting Lebanon’s long-term stability and security.
During his visit, Vice Admiral Ahlgren engaged in discussions with key figures, including President Joseph Aoun, Speaker Nabih Berri, Defence Minister Michel Menassa, and other military leaders such as Major General Hassan Audeh and General Rudolph Heykel. Accompanying him were the UK Chargé D’Affaires, Victoria Dunne, and Defence Attaché Lieutenant Colonel Charles Smith.
Chargé D’Affaires Victoria Dunne reflected on the importance of the new government’s election, stating, “The election of a President and the formation of a new government signals a new chapter for Lebanon’s security, stability, and prosperity.” She underscored the UK’s support for Lebanon as they discussed a proposed recovery roadmap, including the full implementation of a ceasefire agreement from November 2024.
Vice Admiral Ahlgren expressed his pleasure in meeting with President Joseph Aoun post-election and reiterated the UK’s intention to collaborate closely with the Lebanese government. He highlighted the importance of supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces as the only legitimate military force. Moreover, he acknowledged the significance of UNIFIL peacekeepers, asserting, “The UK’s support to UNIFIL peacekeepers’ work is a vital tool for Lebanon’s security.” The Vice Admiral concluded by asserting the integral role of Lebanon’s stability in fostering regional security, affirming the UK’s historical friendship with both Lebanon and the LAF.
