President Bola Tinubu is urging stakeholders in the Niger Delta to support development initiatives led by his administration. He recognizes the region’s economic significance and addresses ongoing political conflicts while promoting the need for collaborative efforts to enhance its development.
President Bola Tinubu has called for support from leaders and stakeholders in the South-South and Niger Delta regions to aid his administration’s development initiatives for the Niger Delta. In a statement issued by Seledi Thompson-Wakama, the director of corporate affairs at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), President Tinubu emphasized that collaboration with regional leaders would expedite progress in the area.
During a recent meeting with the delegation of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, President Tinubu referred to the Niger Delta as “the goose that lays the golden egg,” stressing the importance of prioritizing the region’s development. He stated, “We must care for the Niger Delta, otherwise, we lose the golden egg.”
President Tinubu acknowledged the political strife in Rivers State and his ongoing efforts to mediate the intense tensions between the opposing factions. He indicated, “I got your (PANDEF’s) signal and concerns regarding Rivers State, and I have been on the issue for quite some time,” asserting that his intervention was anticipated due to the escalating situation.
The President encouraged political figures in the Niger Delta to collaborate with developmental agencies to expedite initiatives aimed at the region’s progression. He praised the contributions of Samuel Ogbuku, the managing director of the NDDC, to the economic and infrastructural development of the area. “Community development is very close to my heart, and Ogbuku should be encouraged to do more,” he asserted.
President Tinubu urged leaders in the Niger Delta to adopt a selfless leadership approach, focusing on revitalizing the socio-political and economic landscape of the region. He expressed optimism regarding the ongoing coastal road project, stating that it promises to generate new economic opportunities for both the Niger Delta and the nation as a whole.
He further disclosed that the federal government had engaged international firms to construct new ports in the Niger Delta to broaden economic horizons. King Alfred Diete-Spiff, the Amanyanabo of Twon-Brass Kingdom and co-chairman of PANDEF’s Board of Trustees, commended President Tinubu for his commitment to the development of the South-South region and acknowledged the inclusion of Niger Delta citizens in government roles.
Expressing confidence in the President’s initiatives, Mr. Diete-Spiff declared, “Your government has taken the bull by the horns, and we are confident that you will succeed.”
In summary, President Bola Tinubu has sought the collaboration of stakeholders in the Niger Delta to enhance development efforts in the region. His commitment includes addressing political tensions and fostering economic growth through strategic projects. Both he and key stakeholders emphasize the importance of sustained support and development for the Niger Delta, highlighting its critical role in Nigeria’s economy.
