The two nations have formalized this support through signed notes regarding the provision of Mineral Analysis Instruments as part of the Economic and Social Development Programme.
During the signing ceremony held in Lusaka, Japanese Ambassador to Zambia, Takeuchi Kazuyuki, emphasized that this grant aid aims to bolster Zambia’s mineral analysis capabilities and update geological data. He noted that by improving these capabilities, it is anticipated that exploration and mining activities will become more robust, leading to greater national tax revenues and contributing to poverty reduction efforts within the country.
Minister of Finance Situmbeko Musokotwane expressed optimism regarding the grant, stating it will facilitate the procurement of advanced mining equipment for the Ministry of Mines. He indicated that the acquisition of new technology will greatly enhance the accuracy and efficiency of geological surveys, potentially attracting further investments into the mining sector.
Additionally, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Chief Representative, Tateyama Jotaro, highlighted that this grant follows previous support aimed at Human Resource Development. This has already enabled seven officials and researchers from the Ministry of Mines to complete their studies in Japan, underscoring the collaborative relationship between the two nations in advancing mining expertise.
