The Ministry of Communications in Iraq signed a contract with the Qatari Ooredoo Group for the FIG submarine cable project, aiming to boost internet capacity and connect Iraq to Europe and Gulf nations. On Thursday, the Ministry of Communications in Iraq finalized a contract with the Qatari Ooredoo Group for the installation of the FIG submarine cable. Minister Hiyam Al-Yasiri emphasized efforts to increase state revenue through strategic telecommunications contracts. She stated that this cable represents Iraq’s fourth submarine connection and will significantly enhance internet capacity by over 700 terabytes across a span of 2,000 kilometers, utilizing 24 pairs of optical fibers traversing the Arabian Gulf.
Al-Yasiri elaborated that this initiative aims to link Iraq to Europe via Turkey while establishing connections between Gulf countries and the global telecommunications network. The project is anticipated to be completed by 2027, reflecting Iraq’s strategic role in regional connectivity and telecommunications.
