Colombian Avocados Now Available Year-Round in the U.S. Market

Colombian avocados are now available year-round in the U.S., following an unprecedented import volume from November through February. With projected increases for the 2025 crop, Colombia aims to dominate the avocado market, particularly as Europe receives large shipments from Peru. High-quality fruits, improved handling practices, and stable supplies make Colombian avocados attractive to retailers. GreenFruit Avocados will present at the CPMA tradeshow in Montreal.

Andrew Gomez of GreenFruit Avocados announced that Colombian avocados are now being imported into the United States year-round. The old crop sustained steady volumes from November through February, marking an unprecedented increase in import during these months. This year-round availability is facilitated by decreased shipments from Mexico and the ongoing tariff situation, allowing Colombia to fill the market gap efficiently.

Looking ahead to the 2025 crop, expectations are optimistic, with projections indicating a 25 to 30 percent increase in volume compared to 2024. The majority of this increased supply is expected to reach the U.S. market, while a smaller volume will go to Europe. Gomez noted that Colombia’s geographic proximity to the U.S. is a significant factor, alongside the anticipated large shipments from Peru to Europe.

Colombia’s primary avocado harvest, known as Traviesa, is set to begin in April, with the first volumes arriving in the U.S. market the same month. The main harvest period will extend through August or September, transitioning into a smaller crop that ensures continuous avocado supply year-round. Gomez expressed enthusiasm about the culmination of years of avocado cultivation in Colombia and emphasized the importance of a stable supply for retail partners.

In the last five years, the quality of Colombian avocados has markedly improved due to growers’ commitment to better handling practices and favorable weather conditions. Gomez stated that these factors have significantly enhanced the quality of the fruit available in the market.

GreenFruit Avocados is eager to discuss their programs and the year-round availability of Colombian avocados at the upcoming CPMA tradeshow in Montreal, where they will be at booth 2418.

The introduction of Colombian avocados into the U.S. market year-round signifies a major milestone for both the Colombian agriculture sector and American retail partners. Increased volumes anticipated for the 2025 crop further enhance Colombia’s capacity to provide stable, high-quality supply. Continuous improvements in cultivation and handling practices contribute to the growing market presence of Colombian avocados, solidifying their status as a reliable and appealing choice for consumers.
