Yin Juan, a professor of experimental physics at the University of Science and Technology of China, shared these insights during a recent annual plenary meeting of the National People’s Congress (NPC) held in Beijing.

The inaugural quantum demonstration, which spans an impressive 12,800 kilometers (approximately 7,954 miles) between Beijing and South Africa, was facilitated through China’s advanced quantum communication satellites. Yin elaborated on this achievement by emphasizing its pioneering nature in the southern hemisphere. He also noted that he was a chief payload designer for Mozi, the world’s first quantum communication satellite, launched in 2016, which initiated long-distance quantum transmissions.

In 2017, this groundbreaking technology was previously demonstrated when scientists successfully conducted a secure “quantum call” and transmitted images between China and Austria over a distance of 7,600 kilometers.
