Zimbabwe Enhances Collaboration with Russia in Pursuit of BRICS Membership

Zimbabwe is working to join BRICS to enhance economic growth, as discussed by Foreign Minister Professor Amon Murwira with Russian officials. The focus on economic benefits and cooperation in education, science, and technology underlines the country’s strategy for development under President Mnangagwa’s leadership.

Zimbabwe is intensifying its relationship with Russia as it seeks to join the BRICS economic bloc. Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Professor Amon Murwira, disclosed that the country’s initiative aims to foster trade and stimulate economic growth. During a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow, Prof. Murwira clarified that Zimbabwe’s interest in BRICS is anchored in economic benefits rather than political affiliations.

Prof. Murwira remarked that discussions included joining BRICS, a consortium of nations including Russia, India, China, Brazil, and South Africa, alongside newly admitted members. He articulated the belief that economic growth necessitates participation in trade alliances, stating, “we believe that for Zimbabwe to grow, it needs to be in a grouping of countries that trade together because trade grows economies.”

Under the leadership of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe is proactively pursuing membership in BRICS. Prof. Murwira underscored the importance of BRICS for Zimbabwe’s economic advancement and stability, noting, “Peace is fostered through economic development, and BRICS is one of those groupings which Zimbabwe wishes to be part of.”

Emphasizing ongoing collaboration with Russia and other nations, Prof. Murwira pointed out the central role of innovation, education, science, and technology in driving economic progress. He stated, “what we have done with the Russian Federation and many other countries is to coalesce around the idea of growing capabilities, and this comes through education, innovation, science, and technology.”

Established by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRICS was formed to create an economic order that serves as a counterbalance to the existing system dominated by the United States and its allies.

Zimbabwe is actively seeking to strengthen its economic position by pursuing membership in the BRICS bloc, emphasizing the potential for enhanced trade and growth. Through collaboration with nations like Russia, Zimbabwe aims to leverage innovation and technology for its economic development. This strategic move reflects a desire for greater integration into a global economic framework and stability through collective prosperity.
