Under his leadership, the country saw consistent economic growth and development, making it appropriate to name this strategically important road after him. The Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba Freeway spans 42 kilometers and connects the coastal towns of Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, enhancing Namibia’s national road network.
The national road network serves as a crucial economic facilitator, linking Namibia with neighboring countries through vital transport corridors, thus promoting trade within the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The strategic improvements presented by this freeway will further establish Namibia as a logistics hub in the region and significantly contribute to job creation and economic advancement, involving 40 local suppliers and subcontractors, as well as 11 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The project saw an investment of N$200 million, which included N$150 million for local suppliers and N$50 million for SMEs, leading to approximately 650 jobs for local individuals during construction. Moreover, Phase 2 of the project, which aims to extend the dual carriageway from Main Road 44 to the Walvis Bay traffic circle, is in progress and expected to be completed by mid-2025; rehabilitation of Main Road 54 is slated to begin in April 2026.
Acknowledgments were extended to the Roads Authority for project oversight and to the main contractor, UNIK/Thohi Joint Venture, and the consulting firm SMEC Namibia, for their exceptional contributions to this development.
