The Press Secretary of First Vice-President Riek Machar, Puok Both Baluang, announced the release of eight individuals who were detained alongside Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol in Upper Nile State after recent tensions. Baluang confirmed on Radio Tamazuj that out of 21 detainees, eight individuals have been freed, including relatives of the Minister.
The released individuals are Nelson Malou Lueng Makeny, Kun Tut Gatluak, Peter Magong Degay, Koang Puok Thoat, Biluny Puok Thoat, Buay Thichuong Buoy, Yien Dak Kuach, and Bidit Hoth Guandong. However, both Minister Puot Kang Chol and Gen. Duop Lam, Chief of General Staff for the SPLA-IO, remain in custody. Baluang reiterated the SPLM-IO’s demand for their release along with the remaining detainees.
Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization, welcomed the eight releases but urged for the liberation of the others. He stressed the necessity of adhering to the rule of law and human rights in the context of ongoing political tensions among the parties involved in the 2018 peace agreement.
