Raila Odinga, ODM leader, defends his cooperation with President Ruto, asserting his political stance on taxation remains unchanged. He emphasizes his focus on addressing key governance issues and alleviating the burdens on citizens. Amid criticism of a pact with UDA, he maintains his engagement is issue-based, not politically motivated.
Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), refuted claims of abandoning his supporters following his recent collaboration with President William Ruto. He emphasized that his position on Ruto’s taxation policies remains steadfast and unchanged, despite forming an alliance with the President. Addressing his supporters at a burial ceremony in Kiambu County, he expressed concern over perceptions that his engagement with the Kenya Kwanza administration indicates a shift in allegiance.
During his speech, Odinga remarked, “Now there are a lot of people making noise, saying that I have gone to Ruto and left them. I haven’t left you; I haven’t gone to Ruto. My political stand has not changed.” He explained that his participation with the government aims to tackle pressing national issues, such as governance, taxation, and the economic challenges faced by citizens, asserting that resolving these matters necessitates collaboration and discussion.
Odinga also assured supporters that his priority lies in advocating for policies that ease the burdens on ordinary citizens, particularly regarding taxation and public service. He stated, “Elections will come in 2027, and Kenyans will decide on their own. We no longer want Kenyans to continue suffering.” He highlighted issues within the healthcare system, particularly the need for reforms in the Social Health Insurance (SHA) framework, calling for immediate attention.
In addition, he criticized the recently imposed Housing Levy and high tax rates affecting Kenyans, contending that such policies require urgent reevaluation. He stated, “The taxes Kenyans are paying are too high, and even the housing program is problematic. These issues need to be sorted, and they can’t be addressed if I’m not involved. I have to be in for it to work.”
Odinga’s statements come in response to recent criticism following the signing of a cooperation agreement with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Both Ruto and Odinga defended the pact, labeling it as a reliable framework to promote bipartisan dialogue on critical national issues, including economic reforms, governance, and constitutional amendments. Odinga reiterated that his engagement is based on addressing issues and not on seeking political advantage.
In summary, Raila Odinga remains committed to his political principles despite his cooperation with President Ruto. His focus continues to be on advocating for reforms in taxation and public health, emphasizing the need for bipartisan dialogue to address pressing national issues. Odinga’s stance on high taxes and governance remains consistent, ensuring that he prioritizes the welfare of ordinary Kenyans amidst political alliances.
