An Emirati diplomat has facilitated the delivery of a letter from United States President Donald Trump to Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, as reported by Iranian media. This letter was presented during a meeting with Anwar Gargash, a key diplomatic adviser to the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Ismail Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, confirmed the delivery of the letter by Gargash.
On a recent occasion, President Trump expressed his hope for negotiations with Iran regarding a nuclear deal, emphasizing, “I said I hope you’re going to negotiate because it’s going to be a lot better for Iran.” He further cautioned Iran about the potential for military action if negotiations do not proceed.
In response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei criticized what he characterized as “bullying tactics” employed by Trump. Khamenei stated, “The insistence of some bullying powers on holding talks with Iran does not aim to solve issues but rather aims to assert and impose their own expectations. Absolutely, the Islamic Republic will not accept their expectations.”
This latest development follows President Trump’s unilateral withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal in 2018, which led to the reimposition of sanctions on Iran. Although Iran adhered to the terms of the agreement for over a year after the U.S. withdrawal, it has progressively diminished its commitments in response to the failure of other signatories to uphold their obligations to protect Iran’s interests.
