CS Justin Muturi confirms the Democratic Party of Kenya has issued a notice to exit the Kenya Kwanza Coalition. The party’s independence in decision-making was emphasized by Muturi, who learned of the letter post submission. The official notice outlines political developments as reasons for withdrawal, effective immediately. The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties lacks the authority to reject this exit as proper notice was given.
Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has acknowledged that his affiliated party, the Democratic Party of Kenya (DP), has formally issued a notice to withdraw from the Kenya Kwanza Coalition. He articulated that the party does not need to inform him about its decisions as it is fully authorized to operate independently. Muturi stated, “The party doesn’t have to inform me…about the activities that they are doing because they do the normal things.”
On March 7, in a letter confirmed by Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu, the Democratic Party submitted a 30-day withdrawal notice from the Kenya Kwanza Alliance. Muturi remarked that he only became aware of the letter post submission. He noted, “I just saw the letter also; whether I am okay with it or not, it is a decision that has been made by an organ of the party.”
Muturi initially joined the Kenya Kwanza coalition with the DP in May 2022, after being installed as the party leader. He resigned from that leadership role upon his nomination as the Attorney General. The party’s official notice stated, “Kindly take notice that our stay in Kenya Kwanza is no longer tenable due to prevailing political developments.”
The notice, signed by DP Secretary General Dr. Jacob Haji, follows stipulations outlined in termination clause 8 of the coalition agreement. This notice, effective immediately, signals the Democratic Party’s formal withdrawal, as the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties cannot refuse a party’s decision to exit a coalition given proper notice is provided.
In conclusion, CS Justin Muturi has confirmed the Democratic Party of Kenya’s decision to exit the Kenya Kwanza Coalition, emphasizing the party’s independence in making such decisions. The withdrawal, formally communicated through a 30-day notice, reflects the party’s assessment of current political dynamics. As per legal provisions, this withdrawal is effective immediately following the notice, indicating a significant shift within the coalition.
