The United States has been added to CIVICUS’s monitor list of countries at risk of human rights violations, alongside Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Chile, Slovakia, and 37 other nations. This development is attributed to President Donald Trump’s actions following his return to office in January, according to the global nonprofit organization, CIVICUS, which focuses on civil rights and citizen engagement.
Mandeep Tiwana, the interim co-Secretary General of CIVICUS, stated that President Trump’s restrictive executive orders, institutional cutbacks, and intimidation tactics from senior officials contributed to the U.S. inclusion on the watchlist. He expressed concern that these actions foster a climate detrimental to democratic dissent, which is foundational to American values.
Tiwana emphasized the gravity of the situation, indicating that the Trump administration appears dedicated to undermining the essential system of checks and balances that support democracy. The White House has yet to issue a response to the claims made by CIVICUS.
CIVICUS remarked on the U.S. status, highlighting that gross abuses of executive power threaten the freedoms of peaceful assembly, expression, and association. There is a growing concern across the political spectrum among Americans regarding perceived undemocratic actions from the current administration.
Pakistan’s addition to the watchlist was due to a significant decline in civil liberties and an intensified crackdown on dissent. Notably, instances such as the charging of Baloch Yakjehti Committee leader Maharang Baloch and human rights lawyer Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir illustrate the government’s efforts to suppress dissent, as cited by CIVICUS.
The inclusion of the United States on CIVICUS’s human rights watchlist reflects serious concerns regarding recent actions taken by the Trump administration that undermine democratic principles.
