Three judges will assess whether the accused, which includes a neurosurgeon and a psychiatrist among others, are guilty of manslaughter. Convictions may result in a maximum sentence of 25 years imprisonment.
Members of Maradona’s family expressed their grief in the courtroom, with his daughters, Dalma and Giannina, attending alongside Verónica Ojeda, his former partner, and his daughter Jana. Just before the trial began, Ojeda posted a video on social media featuring Maradona’s son, Diego Fernando, wearing a shirt with Maradona’s face and the caption “justice.”
Central to the trial is neurosurgeon Leonardo Luque, Maradona’s personal physician during the final four years of his life, who performed a critical surgery to remove a blood clot from Maradona’s brain shortly before his passing.
In addition to Dr. Luque, other healthcare professionals on trial include psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, who prescribed Maradona’s medications, psychologist Carlos Díaz, and Nancy Forlini, who coordinated Maradona’s medical care. Additionally, Mariano Perroni, a nursing service representative, Dr. Pedro Di Spagna, who monitored Maradona’s treatment, and nurse Ricardo Almirón are also defendants. Meanwhile, nurse Gisela Madrid is scheduled for a jury trial later this year.
