Petrobras has successfully completed a drill stem test (DST) at the Sirius-2 well, located approximately 31 kilometers off Colombia’s coast at a depth of 804 meters. This test assessed a 100-meter reservoir interval, confirming “good productivity” in the region. The Sirius-2 well is positioned in the GUA-OFF-0 offshore block, 77 kilometers from Santa Marta, the capital of the Magdalena department.
During the DST, samples were collected for laboratory analysis, indicating a significant gas presence in the area. Petrobras operates through its subsidiary, Petrobras International Braspetro – Sucursal Colombia, holding a 44.44% interest in the consortium, while Ecopetrol owns 55.56%. In December 2024, Petrobras and Ecopetrol announced this noteworthy find associated with the Sirius-2 well.
The discovery has confirmed gas volumes exceeding six trillion cubic feet, marking the largest gas discovery in Colombia’s history. This substantial find could potentially increase the nation’s current gas reserves by up to 200%. Originally named Uchuva-2, the Sirius-2 well is the second drilled in the vicinity following Sirius-1 (formerly Uchuva-1).
The consortium plans to continue evaluating the drilling results from both Sirius-1 and Sirius-2, in line with its operational commitments to Colombia’s Agencia Nacional de Hidrocarburos. Furthermore, in February 2025, Petrobras signed a strategic term contract with Bharat Petroleum Corporation for Brazilian crude oil supply and established cooperation agreements with ONGC Videsh and Oil India for exploring oil and gas opportunities.
