Mauritian PM Urges Indian Investors to Enhance Economic Growth

Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam has invited Indian investors to explore business opportunities in Mauritius, asserting their importance for economic growth. He highlighted contributions from the Indian diaspora across multiple sectors, discussed reforms to create a business-friendly environment, and presented Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a prestigious award, reaffirming strong bilateral ties.

On March 11, 2025, Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam urged Indian investors to explore investment opportunities in Mauritius, asserting that their involvement is “vital” for the nation’s economic growth. Speaking at a community event with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ramgoolam highlighted the significant contributions of the Indian diaspora across various sectors including construction, tourism, healthcare, hospitality, and financial services.

Ramgoolam emphasized India’s role as a vital partner for Mauritius, given its substantial global diaspora of around 35 million individuals excelling in diverse fields like technology, medicine, and finance. He stated, “Your participation is vital for the economic growth of Mauritius. When you come here, you enrich our country as well,” reiterating the call for increased investment from India.

To facilitate a more attractive business environment, Ramgoolam announced a series of economic reforms aimed at reducing bureaucracy and eliminating red tape. He mentioned their plan to establish an arbitration center for faster resolution of commercial disputes, asserting, “We’re going to lessen the commercial cost so that disputes can be resolved quickly.”

He noted the importance of clarity, predictability, and the rule of law for investors, and expressed interest in obtaining international expertise to enhance Mauritius’ judicial and business framework, affirming, “We are looking forward to the judges from abroad… I’m sure from India also we can get because we want to raise the standards.”

The engagement to attract investment coincided with Ramgoolam presenting Modi with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean, the highest civilian award in Mauritius. Modi became the first Indian and the fifth global recipient of this honor, which recognizes his efforts in strengthening India-Mauritius relations.

In his acceptance speech, Modi acknowledged the longstanding historical and cultural connections between the two countries. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation, highlighting Mauritius as a strategic partner in the region, particularly in areas such as infrastructure, education, and capacity-building initiatives. Modi humbly accepted the honor, stating, “This is not just an honour for me, it is an honour for the historic bond between India and Mauritius,” during the event attended by over 3,500 participants.

The call for Indian investment in Mauritius by Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam underscores the importance of the Indian diaspora in fostering economic growth. Through proposed reforms aimed at reducing bureaucracy and establishing a favorable business environment, Mauritius seeks to attract foreign investors while strengthening ties with India. The conferment of a prestigious honor upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlights the deep-rooted connections between the two nations, paving the way for enhanced collaboration in various sectors.
