President Sadyr Japarov has asserted that Maxim and Zhanysh Bakiyev will face imprisonment if they return to Kyrgyzstan, following claims of Maxim’s arrival that were denied by officials. He discussed ongoing negotiations for the return of Kurmanbek Bakiyev and the pursuit of recovered funds linked to corruption, emphasizing the court’s assertions on life sentences. Japarov expressed skepticism about the spread of false information regarding the Bakiyevs’ return.
Maxim and Zhanysh Bakiyevs, sons of former Kyrgyz president Kurmanbek Bakiyev, face imprisonment if they return to Kyrgyzstan, according to President Sadyr Japarov. Reports that Maxim Bakiyev arrived in Bishkek via private jet were officially denied by the State Committee for National Security, yet public speculation continues to grow.
President Japarov emphasized that both Bakiyevs were sentenced to life imprisonment. He stated, “If they return, they will immediately go to prison. The court’s verdict is final and cannot be changed or reconsidered.” The President reaffirmed that their extradition requests had been denied, insisting that justice must be served.
Discussing negotiations regarding the former president Kurmanbek Bakiyev, Japarov revealed that offers for his extradition are contingent upon assurances that he will not be imprisoned. He noted, “If you don’t imprison him, we are ready to hand him over.” The President is also contemplating how to deal with Sapar Isakov under similar conditions.
Regarding the possibility of returning the Bakiyevs to face justice, Japarov highlighted the importance of recovering funds associated with various corruption cases, including substantial amounts related to the Bishkek Heating and Power Plant. He reiterated, “Returning stolen funds to the state budget is the job of law enforcement agencies — and we’ve already recovered billions this way.”
Additionally, there is ongoing discussion about the assets previously held by the Bakiyevs, including sums stored in safe deposit boxes and stolen gold concentrate. Japarov expressed the public’s longstanding desire for accountability, questioning why the Bakiyevs could not be repatriated from locations like Moscow or Minsk.
In closing, Japarov remarked, “Those who spread false information probably heard about these negotiations. So they decided to spread rumors about Maxim Bakiyev. How good it would be if he really came! We would put him in jail, and the billions would return to the budget.”
The statements made by President Sadyr Japarov underline a firm stance against the Bakiyevs, affirming their life sentences and the unalterable nature of the court’s verdicts. Ongoing negotiations regarding the extradition of Kurmanbek Bakiyev highlight an effort towards accountability for past governmental malfeasance, with an emphasis on recovering misappropriated funds. Japarov’s remarks also reflect the public’s demand for justice in a landscape marred by corruption rumors.
