TEHRAN – Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, reaffirmed Iran’s dedication to hosting Afghan migrants and refugees during a recent UN Security Council session addressing the situation in Afghanistan. He pointed out that Iran has been significantly affected by the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, following two decades of occupation.
In his address, Iravani stated that Iran’s approach to Afghan refugees emphasizes humanitarian principles, where millions of Afghans have found refuge over the past four decades. He noted, “Legal Afghan migrants face no restrictions in Iran, and Iranian consulates issue 5,000 visas daily.”
Iravani urged the international community to provide increased support amid the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, asserting that donor nations must fulfill their humanitarian aid commitments. He articulated, “Let us be clear; neighboring countries should not be left to bear this responsibility without support from the international community.”
