The Egyptian government has issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s recent decision to cut off electricity to the Gaza Strip, labeling it as an act of collective punishment. In a statement released on Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Egypt reiterated its rejection of Israel’s actions, noting that the suspension of electricity constitutes a blatant violation of international humanitarian principles. Furthermore, the suspension of humanitarian aid deliveries was identified as exacerbating the dire conditions in Gaza.
On Sunday, reports from Israel’s official Broadcasting Authority indicated that the Israeli Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Eli Cohen, directed an immediate cessation of electricity supplies to Gaza. This action prompted additional concerns regarding the humanitarian situation.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi asserted Egypt’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, opposing any displacement of the Palestinian population. He emphasized that the establishment of a Palestinian state remains crucial, asserting that displacement under any circumstances is unacceptable.
In related developments, it was reported that approximately 3,500 individuals have crossed from Gaza into Egypt using the Rafah crossing, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Spokesperson for the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), Hazem Qassem, expressed alarm over the looming threat of famine in Gaza. As the blockade continues for its tenth consecutive day, the critical lack of food and supplies has escalated the humanitarian crisis. Qassem urged the Arab League to implement measures from the latest Arab summit to alleviate the siege.
Additionally, UNICEF has raised concerns regarding the severe water shortage in Gaza, revealing that only one in ten individuals has reliable access to safe drinking water. Despite some recovery of access in November 2024, it has since been compromised once again.
The Gaza Ministry of Health reported that in the past 24 hours, 36 individuals have been killed and 14 injured, contributing to a death toll of 48,503 and injuries of 111,927 since the hostilities began on October 7, 2023.
