On International Women’s Day, Türkiye’s ambassador to Uganda, Fatih Ak, emphasized the importance of essential hygiene products for women and girls during a significant event. Türkiye’s state aid agency TIKA donated equipment, including sewing and overlock machines, to Msichana Uganda, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young women and aiding their access to basic hygiene necessities.
Ambassador Ak expressed pride in the ongoing partnership with Uganda, stating, “As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we are delighted to mark another successful project under TIKA here in Uganda. Development cooperation is a vital pillar of the strong and multifaceted relationship between our two countries, and we take great pride in our shared commitment to progress.”
TIKA has made considerable strides in Uganda, completing 94 projects since the early 2000s. The ambassador noted the collective efforts of Turkish NGOs, which have been actively involved in humanitarian and development initiatives throughout the nation.
Murat Cetin, TIKA’s country coordinator, highlighted that the newly donated equipment would create job opportunities and increase hygiene awareness among young women. He noted, “TIKA has contributed five sewing machines and two overlock machines together with a significant amount of specialized washable nano-technology fabrics to meet hygiene standards.”
Winnie Nakandi, director of Msichana Uganda, expressed gratitude towards the Turkish people for the donations, emphasizing the critical role of empowering women in achieving justice and social prosperity. She stated, “We remain steadfast in our struggle to support underprivileged girls and women to access reusable pads.”
The initiative aims to provide reusable sanitary pads, an economical alternative for low-income earners who find disposable products unaffordable.
