A Thai man has been arrested for laundering money for over 70 call centre gangs, admitting to his involvement in a Chinese-operated scam office. He faces multiple charges, including transnational crime and public fraud, and has reported on the operational methods of these scams, revealing details about money laundering practices.
A Thai male, arrested by the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD), has confessed to laundering money for over seventy call centre gangs. His arrest transpired in Chiang Rai’s Mae Fah Luang district after he returned home to evade Thailand’s crackdown on such operations initiated in February. He faces charges related to transnational crime, public fraud, and the manipulation of computer systems.
The suspect disclosed that he was employed at a Poipet office managed by a Chinese gang leader from November 11, 2023, to February 13, 2025. During this period, the office generated a revenue share of 8-12% from call centre scams, totaling approximately 30 million baht. He admitted to establishing twenty Thai mule accounts to facilitate daily money laundering activities.
His role encompassed several critical tasks: translation for Chinese supervisors; verification of bank applications for mule account creation; overseeing the transfer of funds from mule account holders; converting cash into Tether USDT cryptocurrency using platforms such as Binance and Bitkub; and transferring the USDT to the Chinese superior’s wallet. The Chinese leader subsequently allocated the USDT to various call centre gang wallets based on recorded earnings.
The arrest of the Thai man underscores the ongoing battle against transnational crime and the operations of call centre scams. His involvement in laundering money through a network of mule accounts highlights the complexities of such organizations and their use of cryptocurrency to facilitate illicit activities. This case reflects the efforts of law enforcement agencies to dismantle these criminal networks and safeguard public trust.
