Tensions between supporters of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) and businessman Azruddin Mohamed escalated during an outreach meeting in Lima Sands, Region Two. An estimated 100 residents gathered for the meeting, part of Mohamed’s efforts to engage communities ahead of his election campaign launch. However, the atmosphere grew tense as a confrontation emerged involving PPP/C Member of Parliament Nandranie Coonjah and other party supporters.
Approximately 15 PPP/C supporters protested at the entrance, utilizing loudspeakers and holding placards to express their opposition. One male protester criticized Mohamed, asserting, “Just to remind you, all of you people that Mr. Mohamed has been sanctioned by the US…” A female protester urged residents to reject his presence, shouting, “Everyone get Mohamed out of Lima Sands, chase him, get him out!”
In a dramatic turn, Coonjah attempted to film the gathering while engaging in a verbal clash with community members. This interaction culminated in residents shouting back and ultimately forcing her away. Despite efforts to hinder Mohamed’s entrance, he gained access to the meeting several hours late, which began at 5 PM, with residents waiting since 1 PM.
A video shared by Team Mohamed captured a resident expressing overwhelming support for Mohamed and detailing the community’s grievances. This resident remarked on the neglect from local ministers, stating, “The ministers, none of them in office, don’t come into Lima. Since this road finished, nobody even came to see what’s going on.” Frustration over infrastructural neglect and utilities was echoed among attendees as they criticized the government’s lack of attention to their pressing challenges.
The encounter in Lima Sands highlighted the mounting tensions between the PPP/C supporters and Azruddin Mohamed’s engagement efforts within the community. During the outreach, residents voiced significant grievances about government neglect, particularly concerning infrastructure and utilities. The circumstances surrounding this event reflect a broader discontent among citizens leading up to upcoming elections.
