Namibia is rich in mining resources, including uranium, copper, and diamonds, and now has the opportunity to utilize solar energy to enhance sustainability in this sector. Appian Capital Advisory LLP has acquired a majority shareholding in Rosh Pinah Solar Park from Emesco Energy, marking a significant commitment to decarbonising its investment portfolio.
This acquisition supports the expansion of Rosh Pinah Zinc’s mining project, RP2.0, aimed at a considerable increase in ore production. The solar energy deal will supply 30% of the required energy for this expansion and ensure a fixed energy rate, which is projected to lower the mine’s energy costs by 8% over the ensuing 15 years.
Appian plans to enhance the solar plant’s capacity from 5.4 MW to 16.3 MW, significantly contributing to the mine’s sustainability by reducing carbon emissions by 14 kilotons annually. This achievement is comparable to the environmental benefit of planting 20,000 trees, underscoring a major advancement in conservation efforts.
Emesco Energy will maintain operations at the solar plant, facilitating smooth expansion outcomes while drawing on Appian’s experience with similar initiatives in Brazil. Given Namibia’s reliance on energy imports, this project is expected to yield substantial benefits by bolstering local energy production.
