On Monday, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, called for a parliamentary discussion regarding alleged issues with voter lists during the Lok Sabha’s Zero Hour. Mr. Gandhi emphasized that all opposition parties have raised concerns regarding the integrity of the voter lists across the nation.
He acknowledged the government’s position on voter list management but insisted on the necessity for a thorough discussion on the subject. “The voter lists are being questioned across the country. Questions have been raised by the opposition in one voice in every state, including Maharashtra,” he noted.
Saugata Roy of the Trinamool Congress highlighted discrepancies in the voter lists. He specifically mentioned that voters with identical Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers were identified in both Murshidabad and Burdwan parliamentary constituencies as well as in Haryana.
Mr. Roy indicated that a delegation from his party would approach the newly-appointed chief election commissioner to raise these concerns and urged for a comprehensive revision of the voter lists, particularly in light of the approaching assembly elections in West Bengal and Assam.
He stated, “There are some serious flaws. This has been pointed out with respect to Maharashtra, which had inflated voter lists. This was pointed out in Haryana.” He underscored the urgency for a meticulous review of the voter lists by the Election Commission to address these errors well before the elections.
