NERSA Reports Growth in Solar Energy Registrations in South Africa

NERSA registered 142 solar facilities in Q3 of the 2024-25 financial year, totaling over 1.1 GW of capacity. Western Cape and Gauteng led in registrations, while Limpopo had the highest investment value. Since 2018, NERSA has approved 1,811 facilities with a total capacity of 10.5 GW. This growth reflects effective regulatory efforts in energy generation.

In the third quarter of the 2024-25 financial year, South Africa’s National Energy Regulator (NERSA) registered 142 new solar facilities, contributing over 1.1 GW of capacity. These registrations signify South Africa’s commitment to enhancing its energy generation capacity, with an average investment cost of ZAR 22,371 ($1.22) per kilowatt.

The provinces of Western Cape and Gauteng led the report, recording 54 and 35 registered facilities, respectively. Notably, Limpopo province accounted for the highest investment value, with ZAR 13.5 billion allocated for 627 MW of capacity, underscoring its increasing significance in the national energy landscape.

Additionally, NERSA indicated that one of the newly approved facilities is intended for commercial use. Out of the overall capacity, 82 facilities, equating to over 1 GW, are connected to Eskom’s distribution network, whereas the remainder links to municipal networks.

Since the initiation of its registration framework in 2018, NERSA has sanctioned 1,811 generation facilities aggregating a total of 10.5 GW. According to the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA), there was an addition of 1.1 GW of solar energy in 2024.

NERSA remarked, “This growth is a testament to the effectiveness of the regulatory framework in facilitating energy generation capacity.”

In conclusion, South Africa is witnessing a significant increase in solar energy registrations, emphasizing its dedication to expanding energy generation. With notable investments in various provinces and a robust regulatory framework, the country is positioning itself as a leader in renewable energy. The figures from NERSA and SAPVIA reflect a positive trend that is expected to continue.
