MACC Investigates Ismail Sabri Yaakob: Key Developments in the Probe

The MACC is investigating former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri, having questioned 32 individuals and uncovering over RM170 million in questionable assets. Delays ensue due to his health issues, affecting the schedule of further questioning. The investigation highlights serious allegations of money laundering linked to his tenure from 2021 to 2022.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has actively engaged in questioning 32 individuals as part of its investigation into former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob. This probe focuses on allegations of money laundering, having already identified over RM170 million in various currencies and gold located in multiple safehouses.

In addition to the initial 32 individuals, a source informed the New Straits Times that 23 more individuals are scheduled to be summoned for their statements. Moreover, four individuals previously questioned are being called back for further inquiries. The MACC is also in the process of collecting bank records from several financial institutions and is currently awaiting their acquisition.

Originally, the MACC planned to retake Ismail Sabri’s statement on March 5; however, he reported an illness. Although his appointment was rescheduled for March 7, he submitted another medical certificate that extended his sick leave until March 12. In response to these delays, the MACC has consulted Ismail Sabri’s physician to evaluate the severity of his health condition.

On March 1, the former Prime Minister had already undergone a five-hour interrogation at the MACC headquarters, focusing on a significant amount of funds utilized for promotional and publicity endeavors during his leadership from 2021 to 2022. Following this questioning, Ismail Sabri was hospitalized due to elevated blood pressure after allegedly collapsing at home.

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has confirmed Ismail Sabri’s status as a suspect in the ongoing investigation, emphasizing that the former Prime Minister must provide details regarding the assets he declared back in February.

The ongoing investigation into former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission involves the questioning of numerous individuals and has revealed substantial financial irregularities. With further inquiries and consultations with medical professionals regarding Ismail Sabri’s health, the MACC continues to advance its probe amidst significant developments in the case.
