Canada Rugby Sevens Men Down Tonga and Uganda to Advance in Challenger Series

The Canadian men’s rugby team dominated with a 38-7 win over Uganda and a 26-24 victory against Tonga, securing the top position in Pool B of the HSBC Sevens Challenger Series. They will face Germany in the semifinal. Canada seeks to finish in the top four of this series to compete in a promotion tournament for a chance to return to the elite HSBC SVNS circuit.

In a commanding display, the Canadian men’s rugby team secured a 38-7 victory over Uganda, featuring two tries from Kal Sager, during the second round of the World Rugby HSBC Sevens Challenger Series. Earlier, Canada narrowly defeated Tonga, 26-24, enabling them to finish at the top of Pool B, thereby allowing them to advance to the Cup semifinal against Germany, the winners of Pool C.

Canada’s success was marked by additional tries from Ethan Hager, Jamie Armstrong, Kyle Tremblay, and Ethan Turner, alongside conversions added by Thomas Isherwood, Brenden Black, Armstrong, and Turner. In their match against Tonga, Jamie Armstrong contributed significantly, scoring two tries, with support from Sager and Morgan Di Nardo, while Armstrong and Isherwood completed three conversions during the match.

Overcoming initial leads of 12-0 and 19-10 against Tonga, Canada managed to resist various comeback attempts. Previously, Canada finished as the runner-up in the inaugural round of the rugby sevens series, where they remained undefeated until they faced a defeat against Chile in the final.

Having faced relegation from the elite HSBC SVNS circuit last year, the Canadian squad aims to secure a place in the top four of the Challenger Series. This objective will afford them the opportunity to compete in a promotion/relegation tournament scheduled for May 3-4 in Carson, California, against the top performers from the Challenger Series and lower-ranked teams from the HSBC SVNS. The Challenger Series is taking place in Cape Town, with the next event set for March 7-8, culminating in the finale in Krakow, Poland in April.

The Canadian men’s rugby team showcased their strength by defeating Tonga and Uganda in the World Rugby HSBC Sevens Challenger Series, securing a semifinal berth against Germany. With aspirations to rank among the top four teams, they aim to re-enter the elite competition through a forthcoming promotion/relegation tournament. The performances of players such as Jamie Armstrong and Kal Sager underline Canada’s determination to excel in this series and regain their status in the rugby sevens community.
