The government plans to rename Sabata Secondary School in honor of Wafula Chebukati following a request by MP Kakai Bisau. This initiative will include renovations, 15 new classrooms, and establishing the school as a digital centre of excellence to benefit the local community economically.
The government has announced plans to renovate and rename Sabata Secondary School in Trans Nzoia County in memory of the late Wafula Chebukati, former Chair of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). This decision was made following a request from Kiminini Legislator Kakai Bisau during Chebukati’s burial, in which President William Ruto, who was present, approved the initiative.
The project includes significant renovations and the construction of 15 modern classrooms. Legislator Bisau emphasized the importance of renaming the school after Chebukati due to his pivotal role during the 2022 presidential election, where his announcement of results played a crucial part in preventing national unrest. Bisau stated, “Wafula Chebukati was no ordinary Kenyan… The announcement of the presidential results summed up the man he was.”
In addition to classroom renovations, the school has been designated as a digital centre of excellence, according to Bisau’s proposal. He noted, “Chebukati was an IT lover and enthusiast. We would want to see a digital centre of excellence being set up at Sabata Secondary.” The establishment of this digital hub aims to create employment and stimulate digital opportunities for the local community, aligning with the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
In summary, the initiative to rename Sabata Secondary School in memory of Wafula Chebukati underlines his contributions to Kenyan democracy. The project encompasses renovations, the addition of modern classrooms, and the creation of a technological hub to bolster local employment and opportunities. Ultimately, this endeavor honors Chebukati’s legacy and serves the community’s educational needs.
