Qatar Calls for UN Supervision of All Israeli Nuclear Facilities

Qatar has urged the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to oversee all Israeli nuclear facilities due to Israel’s reported possession of nuclear warheads and its non-signatory status of the NPT. Ambassador Jassim Yacoup Al-Hammadi highlighted the importance of the international community fulfilling its UN obligations regarding nuclear oversight.

During a recent session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Qatar reiterated its call for all Israeli nuclear facilities to be placed under the supervision of international bodies. The statement was made by Qatar’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and International Organizations in Vienna, Jassim Yacoup Al-Hammadi, who emphasized the necessity for Israel to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

Israel is believed to possess several hundred nuclear warheads; however, it does not publicly acknowledge this arsenal and remains a non-signatory of the NPT. Ambassador Al-Hammadi further stressed the importance of the international community adhering to the obligations laid out in various UN resolutions, including those from the UN Security Council, the UN General Assembly, and the IAEA, particularly the mandates from the 1995 Review Conference of the NPT.

The call for oversight by the IAEA aims to address concerns about nuclear proliferation in the region. Ambassador Al-Hammadi’s statements reflect a broader appeal for global accountability in nuclear weapon governance and heightened scrutiny over nuclear facilities globally.

Qatar’s initiative to bring all Israeli nuclear facilities under UN supervision underscores growing international concerns regarding nuclear proliferation. Their emphasis on Israel signing the NPT and adhering to international resolutions highlights the ongoing discourse about nuclear governance and accountability. The call aims to ensure that nuclear activities are conducted safely and transparently, aligning with global non-proliferation efforts.
