Since 16 February 2025, Botswana has faced extensive flooding, displacing over 5,000 people and threatening access to essential services. UNICEF is allocating funds for relief efforts and has appealed for further financial aid to support recovery initiatives amid rising health risks in affected areas.
On 7 March 2025, UNICEF reported that Botswana has been facing severe floods since 16 February due to heavy rainfall. This situation has displaced over 5,000 individuals, including many children, significantly disrupting their access to clean water, healthcare, education, and shelter. The floods are particularly affecting the most vulnerable populations, which escalates the risk of disease outbreaks.
The flooding has also led to substantial infrastructure damage, including road closures and power outages that hinder mobility and essential services. Health facilities, particularly in Molapowabojang and Kanye, are experiencing major service disruptions, jeopardizing the healthcare access of the affected communities.
In response, UNICEF has allocated US$50,000 to provide essential supplies in collaboration with the Botswana Red Cross Society. This aid includes hygiene kits, safe drinking water, and oral rehydration salts, as well as connections to health facilities and child protection measures in evacuation centers.
Additionally, UNICEF has issued an appeal for US$860,000 to aid government efforts in delivering life-saving assistance and planning for long-term recovery in the affected regions.
The UNICEF Botswana Flood Situation Report highlights the severe impact of ongoing floods on communities, particularly vulnerable populations. The organization is actively working to provide essential aid and support recovery efforts in partnership with local authorities. The need for additional funding underscores the critical nature of the situation as citizens navigate the ongoing crisis.
