The United Nations in Uganda has initiated a joint emergency appeal to secure funding for a comprehensive three-month response plan, amounting to USD 11.2 million, to combat the Ebola outbreak detected in January 2025. This financial appeal aims to support national efforts to control the Ebola virus disease during the critical period from March to May 2025.
Mr. Leonard Zulu, the UN Resident Coordinator in Uganda, stated, “This emergency appeal in support of Uganda’s response to the Ebola presents joint actions planned by the UN Country Team in Uganda and eight humanitarian international non-governmental organizations (INGOs).” He highlighted that USD 4.6 million has already been mobilized from UN agencies and INGOs, appreciating the expected support from partners to bridge the funding gap.
The interventions outlined in the appeal will prioritize seven very high-risk districts while allowing for potential expansion to additional districts as required. Dr. Kasonde Mwinga, WHO Representative, emphasized that the objective is to swiftly contain the outbreak and mitigate its impacts on public health and the socio-economic conditions of affected individuals, thus expressing solidarity with the Ugandan government and people.
As of 3 March 2025, Uganda has reported ten confirmed cases of Ebola, including two fatalities, with health workers comprising half of those affected and family members of the index case accounting for almost forty percent. Monitoring continues with a total of 299 contacts listed and investigations ongoing regarding the last confirmed case.
