Tunisia has set an ambitious goal to enhance its phosphate production to 14 million tonnes annually by the year 2030, as reported by the TAP state news agency. This initiative was discussed during a cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, which focused on strategizing the phosphate sector for the period between 2025 and 2030.
During the meeting, led by Prime Minister Kamel Madouri, an initial framework was established to govern the production, transportation, and processing of phosphate. Furthermore, monitoring systems were stipulated to ensure the effectiveness of the implementation process.
Key decisions made include upgrading sulfuric acid units and enhancing their operational readiness. In addition, a maintenance program for heavy equipment and vehicles was initiated, alongside the establishment of a new industrial unit in Skhira aimed at producing finely ground single superphosphate and granulated calcium phosphate, with an annual output of 250,000 tonnes.
Another significant decision was the establishment of an industrial unit in Skhira dedicated to purified phosphoric acid production, expected to produce 60,000 tonnes annually. Additionally, a cadmium removal facility in M’dhilla, which will purify phosphoric acid with an annual capacity of 180,000 tonnes, was also proposed. Moreover, there are plans to develop green ammonia projects and implement tax incentives to further enhance production.
