Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized the significance of Mauritius as a key partner for India in the Indian Ocean, highlighting a shared history, culture, and strong people-to-people ties. He noted India’s longstanding commitment to regional security and development in the Indian Ocean as articulated in the Vision SAGAR initiative in 2015.
Misri described the deepened relations over the last decade, outlining India’s role as a preferred development partner for Mauritius with various economic and capacity-building initiatives. Following the recent elections in November 2024, Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam’s administration will engage closely with India.
The visit is particularly timely, coinciding with new leadership for both countries. Modi will arrive in Port Louis on March 11, where he will pay homage at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, honoring past leaders of Mauritius. Bilateral meetings between Modi and Ramgoolam will include project inaugurations and discussions on cooperation across various sectors.
