On March 8, 2025, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar inaugurated a new Indian consulate in Manchester during his official tour of the U.K. and Ireland. He visited the Lancashire Cricket Club, highlighting a significant enlargement of India-U.K. relations in conjunction with International Women’s Day, as it aligns with the inauguration of India’s new Consul General, Vishakha Yaduvanshi.
Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and Minister for the Indo-Pacific Catherine West were present at the inauguration. Mr. Jaishankar expressed that this event symbolizes corrective measures being taken within the India-U.K. relationship, stating, “We are making up for a lot of things perhaps we could have and should have done earlier.” He anticipates a major escalation in the partnership moving forward.
While speaking at the Lancashire Cricket Club, the Minister reiterated the historical depth of India-U.K. ties, emphasizing the significance of focusing on positive aspects despite the complexities involved. He remarked, “Every big, deep, important relationship is a mixed one. I think it’s important to pick the good side, look for the possibilities there.”
Jaishankar referred to recent tensions, including a protest incident involving a pro-Khalistan demonstrator, which posed challenges to the bilateral relationship. He noted that a reset of ties began during his November 2023 visit, recognizing ongoing issues yet emphasizing a commitment to address them.
Moreover, Mr. Jaishankar pointed out that global dynamics indicate a stronger case for enhanced bilateral ties, marked by efforts toward a free trade agreement (FTA). He posited that the FTA represents a new chapter in India-U.K. relations. The Minister further encouraged U.K. universities to consider establishing campuses in India, with the University of Southampton already planning to launch in Gurugram.
In addition, he announced the establishment of a Pravasiya Bharatiya Sahayata Kendra, the first of its kind in the U.K., aimed at supporting Non-Resident Indians. He also indicated that direct flights from Manchester to New Delhi might soon materialize, following Indigo’s announcement of new routes commencing in July 2025.
