Yemen’s Houthi rebels threaten to resume naval attacks on Israel if the blockade on Gaza aid is not lifted within four days. This warning follows previous escalated attacks against shipping to show support for Palestine during the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. The Houthis’ actions and Israel’s blockade raise significant concerns regarding regional stability and humanitarian access.
On Friday, the leader of Yemen’s Houthi rebels announced that the group would recommence its naval operations against Israel if a blockade on humanitarian aid into Gaza is not lifted within four days. This warning suggests a possible escalation in actions from the Houthis, who had diminished their activities since a ceasefire in January.
The Iran-aligned Houthi movement had previously engaged in over 100 attacks on shipping since November 2023, demonstrating solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, a group recognized as a terrorist entity by the United States. During these attacks, the Houthis sunk two vessels, seized an additional ship, and caused the deaths of at least four seafarers, thereby disrupting global shipping routes and prompting firms to seek alternative, costlier paths around the southern tip of Africa.
The rebels declared, “We will give a deadline for four days. This deadline is for the [Gaza ceasefire] mediators for their efforts.” They further stated, “If the Israeli enemy after four days continues to prevent the humanitarian aid into Gaza and continues to completely close the crossings, we will resume our naval operations against the Israeli enemy.”
On March 2, Israel enacted a blockade on aid truck entries into Gaza, alleging that Hamas was obstructing the distribution of aid to the Palestinian population. In response, Hamas praised the Houthis for their statement, asserting that it reflects ongoing support and solidarity during the 15 months of conflict in Gaza.
The Houthis, who maintain control over much of Yemen, had also warned in February that they would take military action if there were attempts by the United States and Israel to forcibly displace Palestinians from Gaza.
The Houthis’ ultimatum to Israel serves as a reminder of their involvement in the broader conflict concerning Gaza. Their threat to resume naval operations underscores the potential for increased regional tensions. Concurrently, the blockade imposed by Israel highlights the complexities surrounding humanitarian aid in areas affected by conflict, and Hamas’ endorsement of the Houthis indicates ongoing inter-group solidarity amid the crisis.
