The upcoming US-Ukrainian negotiations in Saudi Arabia will focus on three critical aspects: a framework agreement, military assistance, and the negotiation process with Russia. Advisor Mykhailo Podolyak emphasizes the independence of ceasefire discussions from the resource agreement. Key leaders from both nations will participate in these crucial talks confirmed by President Zelenskyy.
During the upcoming negotiations in Saudi Arabia, the delegations from Ukraine and the United States will focus on three pivotal aspects. These will address the resource agreement, military assistance, and the framing of the negotiation process with Russia, as articulated by Mykhailo Podolyak, Advisor to the Head of the Presidential Office.
Podolyak specified that a unilateral ceasefire that lacks a connection to a broader negotiation process is not an option. He emphasized that the ceasefire and the mineral resources agreement are independent matters proceeding concurrently. He stated, “There are many discussions at this stage. There is direct communication between the administrations of the presidents about the need to meet in a bilateral format.”
The advisor outlined the three salient points for discussion: First, the nature of the framework agreement between Ukraine and the US, which is still under development. Secondly, the negotiations will address military assistance, particularly the need for critical weapons such as missiles for the Patriot systems necessary for Ukraine to counter ongoing Russian missile strikes.
“And third, this is the key issue. Regarding what format the negotiation process with Russia might have?” Podolyak questioned, indicating that coordination among Ukraine, Europe, and the US regarding negotiation stages and positions is crucial.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed that the delegations will convene in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, March 11. US Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, also mentioned that the framework of a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia would be part of the discussions. Reports suggest that the Ukrainian side will be led by Andriy Yermak, alongside participating Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.
In summary, the discussions in Saudi Arabia will critically address aspects of military assistance, the resource agreement, and the structure of negotiations with Russia. The successful outcome of these talks is essential for shaping Ukraine’s strategy moving forward in the conflict. Key leaders from both nations will engage in these vital discussions, indicating the significance of international cooperation in addressing Ukraine’s current challenges.
