Jason and Meaghan Geroux, a couple from Orrington, are set to travel to Mustang, Nepal, to participate in a 100-mile ultra marathon. This journey brings together athletes from around the globe, emphasizing the Geroux’s commitment to fitness and adventure. They have previously run marathons in various countries, including Iceland and Ireland and have recently embraced ultra marathons, which often exceed the traditional marathon distance of 26.2 miles.
Their enthusiasm for long-distance running has grown, as Jason Geroux remarked, “We both just fell in love with like putting up these big numbers and were like ‘well that’s kinda cool, well where’s the ceiling, how far can we push it'”. To prepare for the challenges ahead, they train year-round together, regardless of adverse weather conditions, maintaining their readiness for competition.
Meaghan Geroux stated, “Pushing yourself further and longer is something you don’t think you can do until you do it”. In just a few weeks, the couple will race against 50 other athletes in a 103-mile event through the Himalayas, a destination they fell in love with during their 2019 journey to Everest Base Camp.
Reflecting on their journey, Jason noted, “We saw a race going on that year and said ‘maybe someday we’ll be that cool'”. Now, six years later, they are ready to tackle their dream, running various distances over eight days, which requires significant physical and mental fortitude. Meaghan highlighted the mental aspect, saying, “Getting through the night-time hour is a really mental challenge, because you want to sleep”.
Although they are not sponsored athletes, their participation reflects their shared passion for running. In their everyday lives, Meaghan works as a dietician while Jason operates as an epoxy floor and painting contractor. Jason expressed his desire to inspire others by stating, “I just want to try to rub off on the people that I’m around, to say ‘hey you can do this too, I’m just a regular guy'”.
Ultimately, both Jason and Meaghan aspire to demonstrate that anyone can take on such challenges. Meaghan concluded with optimism, stating, “It’s going to be fun, it’s going to be challenging, but I think it’s going to be a great accomplishment when we’re done and we’ll do it together.”
The Geroux couple exemplifies determination and ambition as they prepare for a significant ultra marathon in Nepal. Their journey highlights the importance of perseverance, mental strength, and the joy of undertaking challenges together. Their shared passion for running serves as an inspiration, encouraging others to push their limits and embrace adventure. Ultimately, their story emphasizes that with dedication and teamwork, extraordinary accomplishments are achievable.
