The Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) has reduced electricity tariffs to US$0.22 per kWh for Jungle Energy Power (JEP) customers in Nimba and Bong counties. A new monthly fixed charge of US$1.50 and reduced connection fees to US$40.00 were also introduced to enhance service. The new tariffs take effect from March 20, 2025, to March 19, 2028, aiming to balance consumer interests with JEP’s operational sustainability.
In a significant ruling, the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) has established a new electricity tariff of US$0.22 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for customers in the Jungle Energy Power (JEP) service areas within Nimba and Bong counties. This decision was announced in Gompa City and represents a 12% decrease from the previous rate of US$0.25 per kWh, balancing consumer interests with JEP’s operational needs.
To further enhance service quality and network reliability, LERC has introduced a monthly fixed charge of US$1.50. Additionally, JEP is required to establish an escrow account with LERC’s oversight to ensure transparency in the utilization of the collected charges, with monthly reporting mandated for accountability.
New customers aiming to connect to the JEP network will now only incur a connection fee of US$40.00, reduced from US$100.00. This charge covers necessary connection materials, including an energy meter, low-voltage cabling, and connectors. The revised tariffs will be in effect from March 20, 2025, to March 19, 2028, reflecting a shift from previously approved provisional tariffs.
JEP’s CEO, Tomah S. Floyd, Sr., expressed that the company is processing the LERC’s decision and will engage in discussions with stakeholders regarding its implications. Meanwhile, Seidiki Kromah, the Development Officer for Bong County, commended the reduced tariffs, emphasizing their positive impact on residents’ quality of life.
Charles Umehai, the Deputy Minister for Energy, signaled the government’s commitment to providing reliable and financially feasible electricity supply. He encouraged LERC to assist JEP in expanding access and enhancing revenue, further asserting that JEP’s success demonstrates the potential for Liberian-owned businesses in the electricity sector.
